The Red Roses of Rabbie Burns

Helen Kilpatrick, he met when fifteen,

Co farm worker, ‘Handsome Nell’

She drew his attraction and stole his heart,

He wrote about her so well….

Tis this in Nelly pleases me,

Tis this enchants my soul,

For absolutely in my breast

She reigns without control

Betty Paton was next in line

To claim his infatuation,

She inspired several verses, gave birth to a daughter,

And his conviction for fornication…

Pray draw near and lend an ear,

 And welcome in a Prater,

For I've lately been on quarantine,

 A proven Fornicator

Jean Armour, his eventual wife,

Two sets of twins she bore,

While Jean gave birth, he roamed the peaks,

Added Highland Mary to his score…

The golden Hours, on angel wings,

Flew o'er me and my Dearie;

For dear to me as light and life

Was my sweet Highland Mary

He courted Agnes Maclehose,

Eternal love did vow,

But gave a son to her servant,

The delightful Jenny Clow

Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest!

Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest!

Thine be ilka joy and treasure,

Peace, enjoyment, love, and pleasure!

A daughter next to Barmaid Ann

He charmed her with his manner,

And wrote his famous poem called

‘The Gowden locks of Anna’

Yestreen I had a pint o’ wine,

A place where body saw na;

Yestreen lay on this breast of mine,

The gowden locks of Anna

He left our world with poems and songs,

Aged only thirty seven,

But know this, with your roses, Rob,

You earned your place in heaven

We raise our voices every year

And lift a glass of wine

To toast the much loved Rabbie Burns

And share his Auld Lang Sein
